A twelfth century church towers above the surrounding buildings, and you'll notice how tall some of these houses are as you wander around.
In times gone by, animals were housed in the bottom storey of the house, with families living in the floors above. You can pay a visit to the municipal museum whilst you're in Sault, it's one of the oldest in the region and houses an eclectic mix of paintings and artefacts. Nearby you'll find the impressive Gorges de la Nesque which is well worth a visit and is hailed as the next most impressive gorge after the Gorges du Verdon.

There is a regular market in Sault every Wednesday and a Lavender festival on 15th August every year where you can also take part in the lavender picking competition which is open to anyone to enter. Main Events in Provence, France. Cycling or hiking the mighty Mont Ventoux is on a lot of people's hit lists when they come to Sault as it's only a short distance away.
You can also take a walk along the edge of the Gorges de la Nesque on a 9 kilometre circuit. In July and August you can look over the many lavender fields in all their glory below or take a trip to one of the nearby lavender distilleries or soap making factories. The fertile plains of western Vaucluse, known as the Comtat Venaissin, give way to rising, forested hills and mountains. It is here that the South of France begins to lift itself into the first intimations of the Pre-Alpes. Vineyards, olive groves and orchards spread across valley floors.
Three wine growing areas contribute to the region's prosperity. The valleys and plains are also known for cherries, apricots, figs and melons, including the small, rich Cavaillon melons grown around their namesake town. Wild boars prowl the oak and chestnut forests of the uplands where farmers gather prized black truffles.
The villages here are rich in medieval and Roman history. Mont Ventoux, at more than 6, feet, is sometimes snow-capped. However, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact one of our experts.
The principle idea is that these holidays can be as flexible as you like, with logistical support but no group or leader to dictate the daily activities. You will spend 7 nights in 2 and 3 star hotels. These include a variety of charming traditional buildings from the region including an authentic provincial farmhouse or 'Mas' of the 18th Century. All rooms are en suite and some hotels have swimming pools. All prices are based on 2 persons sharing, so if there is an odd number of people travelling in your party or you are travelling alone, there will be a compulsory supplement for a single room for the tour duration.
